Dirt Girls started with a simple, uncomfortable observation: watching perfectly good produce get thrown away behind a luxury grocery store. That moment made the waste system visible in a way it usually isn't and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

We work on green waste diversion and soil health, but more specifically, we study what happens to organic matter once it's been labeled "trash." Most of what ends up in a green bin isn't dead, it's mid-transformation. Our work is about tracking that transformation closely: how discarded plant matter breaks down, what it becomes, and what it can still do for the ground it came from.

A lot of our focus is on shifting people's relationship to their own waste and teaching composting as a practical skill, not an abstract virtue. Recognizing it as the process that makes new growth possible.

Alongside the fieldwork, we make documentary medi, because a lot of this work is hard to understand until you see it. Cameras let us follow supply chains, farms, and waste streams in ways that make the invisible parts of our food and material systems visible again.

We're a small, LA-based nonprofit, and our work is both hands-in-the-dirt practice and long-term systems thinking: how trash moves, who decides it's trash, and what a more honest, less wasteful relationship with it could look like.
